Description
Flower of the Winds, a newer, larger cottage sits on part of the grounds where 500 original cottages were built between 1859 and 1880 in what is now known as Oak Bluffs, on Martha's Vineyard, an island that is part of Massachusetts. This new American building type, called the Martha's Vineyard cottage, was a unique architectural form thought to be an invention of the local carpenters. Originally the cottages that were built cost between $150 and $600 each, the most expensive one was $3,500, built by Governor Sprague of Rhode Island. The cottages were small and replaced the tents that were originally used at the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, formerly known as Wesleyan Grove, that was connected with the religious 'campmeeting' movement of the early 19th century. The Vineyard's first campmeeting was held at West Chop in 1827.
