Description
The Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial is an eight-foot tall, bronze statue of a fisherman wearing oilskins and standing at the wheel of his ship, while keeping his footing as it slopes to one side. An an artistic competition to create a lasting memorial to the thousands of fishermen lost at sea in the first three hundred years of Gloucester's history was held and the English sculptor Leonard F. Craske (1882-1950) was awarded the honor. It has since become a symbol of the city of Gloucester, Massachusetts.
